Plaosan Lor is situated in Bugisan village, Prambanan District , Klaten regency, Central Java. It was built by Rakai Panangkaran a king of Syilendra dynansty who also built Kalasan, Borobudur and Sewu temples. The site comprises twin main temples and Mandapa which are surrounded by 58 Perwara temples and 194 stupas. Some Perwaras in the complex have inscription explaining the donors.

Concern on Plaosan Lor temple was started in the Dutch Period by research and restoration on South main temple. Conservation efforts were continued by Indonesian government by Archaelogical Office of Central Java.
